The KNUST Photonics Student Chapter successfully hosted its first Open House Exhibition this year at the Department of Physics, KNUST, creating a vibrant platform that brought together students, faculty members, and visitors from various academic departments across the University. The event served as an outreach and educational initiative aimed at increasing awareness of photonics and highlighting its growing relevance in science, technology, and industry.
The exhibition featured a series of hands-on demonstrations, interactive exhibits, and engaging technical discussions that provided participants with practical exposure to real-world photonics applications. Attendees explored how light-based technologies are driving innovation in key sectors such as optical communication and healthcare.
Among the major highlights were live demonstrations of the openUC2 modular microscope, Photonics Explorer Kit (PEK), the Optica Suitcase, and the MetroLaser, Inc. Digital Holographic Microscope (DHM). Participants also interacted with an in-house built material analyzer and several other experimental setups developed by members of the student chapter. These demonstrations offered valuable insight into both foundational photonics concepts and emerging technologies, while encouraging curiosity, inquiry, and interdisciplinary engagement.
The Open House Exhibition provided an excellent opportunity for students to connect theory with practice, engage directly with advanced optical instruments, and interact with peers and mentors passionate about photonics research and innovation. It also reinforced the chapter’s mission to foster experiential learning and promote the development of technical skills among students.
The KNUST Photonics Student Chapter extends its sincere appreciation to all participants, guests, and supporters who contributed to the success of the event. Special recognition is given to the faculty advisors, Dr. Akyana Britwum and Dr. Michael Kweku Edem Donkor, whose guidance and continuous support were instrumental in making the exhibition a success. The chapter also acknowledges the dedication and teamwork of its members, whose commitment ensured the smooth planning and execution of the event.
The chapter also expresses its gratitude to SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, Optica, and the Ghana Photonics and Optics Laboratory (GPOL) for their invaluable support toward the realization of this initiative.
